it was the tap on my shoulder that finally brought me back to reality. “What you watching?”
“Erm; World Cup round of 16. France Argentina. It’s a great game” I said rather sheepishly putting down my iPhone and removing my headset. In my enthusiasm I’d forgotten that I’m not yet in Russia and my oohs and ahhhs had shattered the usual Saturday morning tranquility of the local coffee shop.
It was Pavar’s stunning volley for France’s second goal that brought me out of my seat and prompted the tap on the shoulder. Sheldon should make that shot the subject of his next thesis. Considering the height of the ball and Pavar’s body shape it defied the laws of physics. At least in my universe, that ball would have ended up in row ZZ near the corner flag.
Settled back in my chair, I tried to explain my enthusiasm to the guy who had tapped my shoulder. But he and his two mates quietly ordering their coffee couldn’t get it. They kind of know something amazing is going on in the rest of the world but it’ll never be part of their soul.
This time next week there will be no tranquility to disturb!
